For Wednesday: Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Vol.3, Chs.1-8

Lydia and Wickham--the happy couple!

Answer TWO of the following…

1. How does Elizabeth’s feelings about Darcy change at Pemberley?  What does she experience or see here that challenges her prejudiced notions?  Consider the passage in Chapter 1 where she reflects, “And of this place…I might have been mistress!  With these rooms I might now have been familiarly acquainted!”

2. Related somewhat to the above, at what moment in the novel does Elizabeth definitively ‘fall in love’ with Darcy?  Is she aware of this moment, or does Austen simply let us ‘see’ it before she does?  Or is it announced as she, herself, discovers it?  Does this moment suggest that she had been in love with him (to some degree) for a longer time than she realized?

3. Why is Lydia’s elopement with Wickham a scandal for the Bennet family?  What does such a marriage mean in early 19th century society, and why might it reflect poorly on the innocent daughters—Elizabeth, Jane, Kitty, and Mary?  Consider, too, Mr. Collins’ letter upon hearing the disastrous news: “The death of your daughter would have been a blessing in comparison to this” (Ch. 7).

4. In some ways, Austen is lightly satirizing Elizabeth Bennet as someone who reads too many books and expects life to mirror what she reads.  In general, what is the difference between reading a character in a book and reading a person?  How do we know she reads people like books—and when does she realize the danger of this approach?

    2) Elizabeth and Darcy are the most importance characters in the novel. From my point of view, Elizabeth was not in love with Darcy but when they continue to meet, she started to feel different feelings from Darcy because of his personality. Both where totally different than the others. From one point, Elizabeth was intelligent and Darcy, with a strong personality noticed that she wasn't an "easy women" so that captivated more.
    4) Jane Austen introduces Elizabeth Bennet as main character and the one that synchronizes the main events. She was a very strong personality and she tries to play a different roll than the other woman in the 19th Century. Reading a character in a book differences from reading it by person in details, you can miss important things that talking with the other one you can recognized.

    1. The beauty of Pemberley has her regretting her refusal of Darcy. The housekeeper puts a nice spin on every aspect of Darcy...Elizabeth is falling hard for him. The housekeeper describes Darcy as sweet-tempered, generous, good-natured, and an excellent provider for his younger sister.

    2. I think the trip to Pimberley and hearing all of the glowing phrases really gets Elizabeth's heart to racing. She realized that she had the wrong impression of Darcy and her prejudices dropped. I think Elizabeth had been in love with Darcy but didn't want to say it out loud. Prejudice, to me, got in her way.

1.) Her feelings change because she realizes how much she misjudged him. When the housekeeper had nothing to say but nice things of her master she wonders if that could be the true Darcy. She also had the thought that had she accepted his offer she now would be well acquainted with all the rooms and the surrounded neighbors as well as with his sister.
2.) I believe that she first realized it when she was visiting Pemberley. When they received the invitation to dine with them and meet Darcy's sister she noticed how he talked to her family and how charming he was. Everything that the housekeeper said was now weighing on her mind and she was seeing it shown as he was talking. Also she thought that he still might have those same feelings for her and she wanted to be able to see them if he did.

    1. When Elizabeth arrives at Pemberley at see's Darcy again, she realizes that Darcy is not what she originally thought he was. She started hearing only nice things about him. She is falling for him the more that they meet. At this point, he realizes that she has made a mistake by not accepting his offer.

    2. When she enters into Pemberley, she notices how beautiful it is and the life that she could have there with Darcy. He is apparently this sweet and generous man which is not what she originally thought. She has finally broke down the walls and let herself just fall in love with him. She stopped letting her earlier opinion of him affect her feelings for him in this moment.

    2) Elizabeth starts to fall in love with Mr. Darcy when he tells her to introduce him to her aunt and uncle and also when he asks her if he could introduce her to his little sister. The fact that he was actually being civil is what impressed her. I think Elizabeth is aware of the fact that she has feelings for him but she kind of hides it. I think she was embarrassed of the things she thought of him before and realized how much of an ass she was because now she sees how much of a gentlemen he really can be. She basically judged a book by its cover to soon before actually getting to know the facts. I feel she's been in love with him to some degree but just had to much pride in herself to admit it.

    4) The difference between reading a book and actually reading in person is that in a book they just give you an overview of what the person was like. No matter how much they may try to explain in detail about a person, you still wont get the full satisfactory of really getting to know what that person was like. In person you get to experience personally and see for yourself. You catch onto the smallest details about that person. Elizabeth is this person who's understanding of many things in the world is far beyond many year of women her age. She knows to much to soon. Like for Mr. Darcy she just automatically came to the conclusion that he's awful after all the stuff she heard about him when in reality he had good reasons for them all and once again felt like an ass when she finally read his letter and understood his reasons.

    1) While Elizabeth was walking around Darcy's home I think she started to slowly let her guard down(with her self at least). As she was looking around she realized that she could have had this life and could have easily fit in with him, but then she thinks about her family and knows (or so she thinks) that she could have never invited them there. As she was looking at the portrait of Darcy she starts to realize that she actually likes him. When they meet Elizabeth is so worried that he is going to throw the letter in her face, and that it is just going to be a awful experience, but the opposite happens. Darcy was polite and does not once mention the letter. It is almost like the letter and the proposal is a secret between them. Elizabeth is extremely surprised when Darcy asked to meet her aunt and uncle, but I think what really gets her is when he invites them to his home. Darcy is really trying here, he is letting down his guard. He never really 'acted' in front of Elizabeth, but here she sees him in his truest form, how is with people that he actually cares about. that is when she starts to realize that he has acted that way to her the whole time.

    2) I think that Elizabeth has been in love with Darcy for a while now, but doesn't really realize it until the letter I think. When she starts realizing that she judged him wrong the whole time, it makes her question a lot. I think Austen did a great job on letting us see that they were in love before they realized it them selves. I think it scares her that she does love him, because she doesn't see her self worthy of such a 'catch', and is afraid that he is just going to leave. Austen shows us through many different scenarios that he isn't going anywhere that he truly loves her with everything he has.

    (1) Elizabeth's feelings about Darcy change at Pemberly when even the servants had nothing but good things to say about him. Darcy wanting to meet her aunt and uncle also made a big impact on Elizabeth. She began to reconsider her feelings when she realized that Darcy wasn't bitter about her rejection and maybe even wanted her more.
    (2) I think Elizabeth began to realize that she was falling for Darcy when she seen his portrait on the wall at Pemberly. I think she had been in love with him for awhile and either didn't realize it or didn't want to admit it. She started to have feelings for him from the moment she read his letter.

1.)Elizabeth's feelings for Mr. Darcy change after Pemberly because she sees that he is making an effort even after her rejection of him. He is anxious to communicate with her family members and start a relationship with them as well as her. He is deep down a gentleman and she starts to realize it. She cant help but have feelings for him, and realizes that she judged him to soon. Maybe her "first impressions" were wrong, and maybe he is a good whole-heartedly man after all. Elizabeths pride and Mr. Darcy's prejudicial nature don't matter when they are together. Plus he can also provide her with what she needs.
2.) I believe that it is when he wants Elizabeth to introduce him to her aunt and uncle, and wants to also go fishing sometime with her uncle. Shes sees that he isn't just intrigued by her, but her family members as well. She realizes that barriers don't matter to him. He can be charming and respectful at the same time. She knows that he really cares for her, because regardless of her denial of him, he still wants to be with her.

    1) At Pemberley Elizabeth begins to regret her original choice to refuse Mr.Darcy proposal. She realizes that all this nice stuff could be hers. I also think she feels kind of bad for how she initially judged him. Not to mention in Pemberley, Mr. Darcy seems to still be interested and seems to be making some what of an effort to show Elizabeth that he is still interested.

    2) I honestly think that Elizabeth feel in love with Mr. Darcy when they were in his mansion, and the butler started saying all those good things about him. Also when Mr. Darcy started talking to Elizabeth's uncle about a fishing trip and inviting them back to hangout. Which was unheard of at the time for someone of Mr. Darcy's rank in life to affiliate with them let alone invite them over for company.
