For Friday: Heinrich, Monet, pp.24-43

Answer TWO of the following as a Comment below:

1. How did technology and the ‘modern’ world of the mid-1800’s change how painters painted and saw the world?  What advances did Monet and his contemporaries have over their predecessors? Also, how did these advances influence Impressionism?

2. Compare Monet and Renoir’s paintings of La Grenouillère (pp.28-29): what distinguishes Monet from Renoir?  What do you think Monet wanted to capture that was either less important or invisible to Renoir?  Also, which one do you prefer and why?

3. Based on the paintings in these chapters, what kind of subject matter most inspired Monet?  Unlike other impressionists, he almost never did portraits or still lifes; why do you think this was?  What views/subjects/ideas were most congenial to his style of painting and why?

4. Heinrich writes that “there is an intrinsic and irresolvable contradiction in the aim of preserve in permanent form the passing moment” (32).  Based on this comment, why might we say that all Impressionist paintings are somewhat sad, or at least bittersweet, even when they are capturing bright, happy subjects?  What is the essential ‘mood’ behind all Impressionist paintings—and Monet’s art in general?

    2. The difference n the paintings r the distance it is painted from. Monet has a furthur out view and more light less shade but still showing the activies present in the scene.

    4. As for the words passing moment, I think it suggest that the painting r in movement and it resembles a blur instead of fine line.

    1. Casey--try to respond in slightly greater detail in your responses. I want to see you push beyond single-sentence responses and use details from the book, etc. The more work you do in these responses, the better you'll do on the exams and paper.

  2. 3) Monet liked movement. The book says he was fascinated with the technology of his day--trains and boats-- things that moved. People in his paintings are usually moving. Even nature is in motion in Monet's work. It is interesting how a painting that is still can convey such movement.
    4) The art could be considered bittersweet because, as Casey said, it is a blur just as a passing moment is a blur. Look away and it's gone, never to be recaptured except in fading memory or a Monet painting.

    2. Monet evenly distributes his shadows and places his light distinctly at the margins. His painting is much more lighter than Renoir's. Renoir has a more intimate focal point with the people being closer together, whereas Monet's people are further spread out. Monet wanted to highlight the properties of water. I prefer the Monet because it's brighter, and the people have a little more definition; they look like smudges in Renoir's.

    3. Monet liked to paint life in motion, never still. Like Teresa mentioned, the book did say he was fascinated with trains and boats. I think he preferred to paint movement because the paintings were sort of precursors to videos. I don't think he liked to paint still portraits because they didn't portray life in its true bustling form.

    2. The main two differences that I see between Monet and Renoir’s paintings are the color scheme and the amount of light present. Monet’s painting is much brighter to me! The perspective of Monet’s view shows us that the river continues. I think that Monet wanted to show (or impress upon) us the idea that the river is much more than just the small section we can see. Renoir’s painting just seems to chop the river into one section. Almost as if he is saying, “this is the only pretty/important part of the river.” I honestly like aspects in both paintings. I like Monet’s color scheme, probably because it has that bright blue color! But I like the tree and leaves surrounding the small island in Renoir’s. Both are extremely talented!

    3. Real life and nature. Not what life SHOULD be but what life ACTUALLY IS. I obviously have no idea as to why Monet didn’t paint portraits often, but I would like to think that he thought those things were boring and lifeless. Monet painted what he wanted and what he liked, not what other people expected! He found beauty in nature and the everyday routine of normal people. His style of painting (impressionism) gives us, modern day viewers, a better idea as to what life was actually like back then.

    3) Monet was inspired by the life of nature and he brought what his minds eye captured by introducing the movement of the wind and use of shadows. The paintings he wanted them to vbe alive.
    4) The sadness is present simply because each second in the painting the of the past, that moment will never be again.

    3. I feel like Monet liked most the things you cannot quite capture in a painting. The things that move it. That make you feel an emotional connection to it. Like a woman staring out at an ocean, the way she adores the wind on her cheeks. That is the hardest thing to paint I believe. Which is a reason why I think he liked painting that the most. He didn't care to go into detail over facial features or designs on clothing. But when you look at his paintings you see movement and life. You get an overall feel of what they were doing at the time they were being painted. I think that is what he wanted to show people and do.

    4. I believe that the impressionists paintings seem sad because you don't see the subjects facial features in detail. You see them from a far or blurry. You can't see them for exactly what they are doing. I think that these types of paintings are more you to imagine what they are doing or thinking instead of showing you exactly how they feel themselves. I think Monet wanted to let you use your own imagination with these. The mood is whatever you yourself is feeling at the time. I think the painting leaves it up to you to decide how to feel about it.

  7. Number 2:
Renoir concentrated on the people and their fashions and what they were doing and how they were enjoying themselves while Monet spread out the color and focus to the whole painting to take in the entire landscape, the water, the light, the reflections in the water, while the people were just second thoughts.

  8. Monet really liked being outside. Outdoors, you don't find posed still life, you find nature which is always moving and always changing. The way the light moves and reflects and things catch that light and reflect it back is always in motion, but that was his thing.

    2. Compare Monet and Renoir’s paintings of La Grenouillère (pp.28-29): what distinguishes Monet from Renoir? What do you think Monet wanted to capture that was either less important or invisible to Renoir? Also, which one do you prefer and why?
Renoir seems to focus more on the people white Monet focuses more on the landscape or nature. Monet's also seems more alive like the water seems to be flowing. I think Monet's use of sunlight distinguishes his from Renoirs. Monet wanted to capture the beautiful surroundings. I prefer Monet's painting because everything looks more real.

    3. Based on the paintings in these chapters, what kind of subject matter most inspired Monet? Unlike other impressionists, he almost never did portraits or still lifes; why do you think this was? What views/subjects/ideas were most congenial to his style of painting and why?
Monet was fascinated by water. He loved to paint the seas, lakes, ponds, and rivers. Monet didn't like to paint portraits or still lifes because he wanted his paintings to look alive. Monet liked to paint anything in motion.

    2) Renoir's painting is more up close and personal. He only paints the view of a small area. The Colorado seem dark and the people are more smudged than Monet's. Monet's painting is more out in the open. More visible and exciting to look at. The people are actually more visible. The water also looks more realistic. With Renoir's painting it looks as if he was in a hurry and not really seeing the beauty of nature and people. Monet took his time ans seemed like he wanted to capture every moment.

    3) Based on the paintings in these chapter Monet was really into movement and nature and how he really sees things. To me I don't think Monet did portraits or still life because it was boring and not real. Like everything was staged and people never used their imagination and painted what they were told or paid to paint.

    2) In Monet's painting he focuses more on the land scape then the actual people. Where as, Renoir's painting he painted his close up and focused more on the people then the landscape. In Renoir's painting he showed more detail with the people, where as Monet showed less detail of people and more on the land. I like Monet's painting more for the fact that he didn't just paint the people he showed what was more important.... the landscape.
3)Monet focused more of the landscape then of people. Maybe he felt like portraits and painting people was over rated, so he wanted to show the world that the people do not have to be the center of attention. Even though he paints people into his painting he paints them into the background and brings out the landscape.

3.)Monet was a person that, if I'm not mistaken, believed in the value of realism. Due to his fascination with transportation (trains and boats), it seems only reasonable to think that Monet was intrigued by capturing the motion of everyday life. Monet showed what you actually saw if you was in his place, a wide landscape, or people walking through the fields. He was fascinated by the idea of motion, and was always painting things in motion, because it looked more alive than a still life painting. He wanted to make you feel like all this liveliness was happening right in front of you.
4.) An impressionists painting more or so feels like it is happy nor sad, but just a sense of liveliness. I don't think it is supposed to truly convey a certain emotion. Impressionism can be any looked at any which way you choose. The blurriness of people or of certain objects, I believe is to show that all nature of the paintings can be seen as equal in beauty. Everything in the Impressionist paintings are to be seen as part of a surreal view in motion, which is why Monet put the live in liveliness when it came to his paintings. He wanted to show that any simple object or daily living can be a beautiful thing.

2.I feel like Renoir focuses more on people where as Monet focuses more on the landscaping and the way the win blows or the water moves, he shows you an outer feel and lets you use your imagination more. I think Monet's reflections and the little things that you don't think about when you look at his paintings make him different form Renoir. Like the sun setting on the water, and the colors he uses. I prefer Monet, I like being able to make up my own thoughts and perspectives of what is going on in the painting.
    4. I think the impressionists paintings seem more sad because it doesn't show in great detail peoples smiles. It leaves it up to your imagination. When you look at a impressionist painting you immediately create your own thoughts towards it and imagine what they are doing in your head. It doesn't show you exactly what they are doing or feeling.

    3. Monet was really one of the few people that believed in realism. When he painted he showed what you would see if you were in his place, maybe a colorful sunset or a wide landscape. His paintings looked more alive and made things look as if they were in motion.

    2. Renoir mainly focuses on people and Monet focuses on the landscape. They could paint the same thing and it still look entirely different. He paints how maybe a mother is chasing her child in a field whereas Renoir wouldn't really go into much detail about the background.
