For Wednesday: Heinrich, Monet, pp.6-23

Answer TWO of the following as a Comment below...

1. What biographical circumstances shaped Monet the artist?  How does knowing a little about his early life help us appreciate the paintings and the movement he helped create?

2. What was Monet’s first truly successful painting?  What was new or revolutionary about it according to the book?  Can you see these qualities in the painting itself?

3. Related to the above, what early painting is generally considered a ‘flawed’ painting by critics (and the book)? Despite its mistakes, what is notable about this painting that shows us the mature Monet?

4. Which painting on pages 6-23 do you find most interesting or striking?  What do you like about it?  Does the book help you appreciate or see different qualities in it that you might not have seen before (and if so, what are they)?

  1. Question 3:
The early painting by Monet, "Women in the Garden" was considered a "flawed" painting by critics due to his new style of painting, particularly the heavy brush strokes and the muted blending in of the women in association to the garden. It is an important painting, however, as it got Monet started on the style he became famous for.

    2. Monet's first truly successful painting was Camille, or Lady in a Green Dress. What was loved about this painting was the detail in the dress. The painting was realistic, and loved for it. This painting put Monet in the same category as Manet--who was already a greatly established artist.

    4. My favorite painting from pages 6-23 is the Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois on page 18. Its exceptionally beautiful. I love the details of the church, as well as the pastels used throughout the painting. I also appreciate Monet's use of light and shadow in this painting. Even the detail in the people is truly impressive given their size, and I love the way Monet portrays landscaping in his work.

  3. 1. He was passionate about his work and he was willing to learn at his own cost. He left his family behind and took critisisum for long periods of time. Rejection meant nothing but finding his own destiny such as having an outside studio.
    4. I like the blk and white paintings best, they are easier to look at. I think they show more detail than the color smudges. The paintings are not appealing to me b/c they are blurred as if I were looking from afar or if I didn't have my glasses on, I like to see detail.

    2. Lady in a Green Dress brought Monet's his first true success. Critics constantly praised his handling of the fabric of the dress and the detail he paid attention to; it looked realistic. I can't say that I see the "realistic" view of the painting. I would say that it does contain elements of impressionism.

    4. Women in the Garden appeals to me the most. This painting seems more "real" to me even though the critics view the women as "dummies." I like this painting because my eyes go straight to the bright area, highlighted by the sun hitting the grass. The brightness of the grass and they lady's dress who is sitting down is just visually eye punching.

  5. 3. The book mentions the shortcomings of the Monet’s 1866 Women in the Garden. The painting was rejected at the Salon, and I find it interesting that the author is explicitly critical of the work, stating one of the figures appears to be gliding “as if she had a trolley concealed beneath her dress”(pg. 17). I admit that I can see exactly what he is talking about, but without the direction of an artistic authority, I might have considered every aspect of the work purposeful. After critiquing the painting, the author immediately praises it for its fascinating use of light, a technique that Monet became famous for as his career matured. I appreciate that the text is honest in its opinions on why some earlier works fell short of the quality the artist’s mature career has established.

    4. Looking at the examples on pages 12-13, I find it interesting that different artists made efforts at the same subject matter and gave their paintings the same name. I like that I can clearly see the differences in style and personal interest. The Manet Le déjeuner sur l’herbe features a bright, naked woman as the focus in generally dark surroundings, and it is clear to see why Manet’s work was considered “controversial in the extreme” (pg. 12). I prefer Monet’s Le déjeuner sur l’herbe because I can clearly see the beautiful stream of light filtering through the trees and his noted artistry with shadows. I especially like the bright pink in the dress on the left panel on page 13. The critique of the painting addressed in the previous response (Women in the Garden) helped me to consider the purpose and psychologies of the figures and pay attention to the details like fabric and light/shadows.

    3. According to the book, Monet’s Women in the Garden (1866) was flawed and not appreciated. Critics say that the women seem to not fit into the nature behind them; these women appear lifeless or “dummies in a garden” (17). The notable feature of this painting is the use of sunlight. The book states that, “He has endowed his picture with life – not the life of people but the life of shadow and light” (17). The use of light to enhance the detail of the painting show us that Monet is more mature or ‘ahead of his time.’
    4. I enjoy Monet’s Cape La Heve at Ebb Tide (1865) painting the best. I have lost time gazing at this scene at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth during two different visits. I honestly have no idea why I love this painting! I guess it is the fact that I can look at it and feel like I am there, walking a few steps behind the other people in the painting. The book mentions something about “colour harmonies (11)” which I would not have necessary realized. Yes, I noticed that the colors seem to work well together but no, I didn’t realize that this was a big enough element of the painting that Monet would be recognized for it. The book helps me see the details of the painting rather than just the big picture.

  7. 2.) I think that his most "truly" successful painting was Camille /Lady in The Green Dress. Why it was successful, I think that it was because it was different, and it wasn't all about detail. Also because it focused on color and it wasn't over the top. That and I think that it was something he knew that people were going to remember for a long time. And because it was a picture that captured the beauty and essence of a woman without over doing it and, being flashy about it.

  8. Question 4:
I like the painting "Cape La Heve at Ebb Tide". I have always been a fan of the sea, I have been fortunate to see the sea coast all over America and in Europe, including Normandy in France and Spain. This picture brings back ,a lot of memories of France and the rough, rocky seacoast I visited. I like the way he uses shadow and light at the same time to bring out the feeling and emotion of the scene. The rough waters and the rocky outposts do not make it tranquil, but give it a essence of being tough and sturdy, giving the history of the beach and the Normandy invasion, this adds to the mood of a place that survives. The sun and the clouds and the play of shadow and light enhance the feeling as well.

    2. His first overall successful painting was of Camille also known as the Lady in the Green Dress. This painting is successful because according to the critics it showed a real person, it highlighted and showed of the dress and it appeared to be moving. You could see the detail of the fabric and imagine the way it might have looked had you been sitting there yourself. You could tell that this was a real person and it showed her and the dress without going over board.

    4. My favorite painting is the Church of Saint-Germain-l' Auxerrois, I love the picture with the people being busy in the street, you can imagine being there on that spring day hearing the bustle of the streets. Also seeing the building right across from you and looking at how immaculate it is. Monet has captured the perfect spring day in the painting in my opinion.

    2. What was Monet’s first truly successful painting? What was new or revolutionary about it according to the book? Can you see these qualities in the painting itself?

His first really successful painting was the one of his girlfriend called Lady in the Green Dress. Most of the attention in this painting was aimed at the dress. The critics loved how he portrayed the silk material making it look realistic a mature. One of the critics in the book even stated "it is not a doll's dress". She explains how it is noticeable that it is a fine silk. I can see from the painting that it is silk. The way he textured and shadowed the dress gives it that silky look.

    4. Which painting on pages 6-23 do you find most interesting or striking? What do you like about it? Does the book help you appreciate or see different qualities in it that you might not have seen before (and if so, what are they)?

My favorite painting is Terrace at Sainte-Adresse shown on page 21 which is also the painting we reviewed today in class. I personally love sunshine, the ocean, and flowers. This painting brings all of these in one. I love how bright the painting is giving it a happy and peaceful undertone. I love that he used a broad array of colors and how he blended the sky with the horizon. The main thing the book helped me realize is the brushwork. I did not catch his brushwork at first. The first thing I noticed was the colors. Other than the brushwork the book did not reveal anything else to me. I noticed the painting when I first turned the page and instantly fell in love with it. This would be the type of painting I would put in my house.

    (2) What was Monet's first truly successful painting? What was new or revolutionary about it according to the book? Can you see these qualities in the painting itself?
Monet's first truly successful painting was Camille: Lady in a Green Dress. Critics praised the handling of the silk fabric of the dress. They claimed it looked as if it was alive. Yes, I can see the realness of this painting and it seems as if the woman is standing right there.

    (3) Related to the above, what early painting is generally considered a ‘flawed’ painting by critics (and the book)? Despite its mistakes, what is notable about this painting that shows us the mature Monet?
Women in the Garden is considered a flawed painting by critics because the women do not seem a part of the natural scene. Even stating they are like dummies in a garden.(pg. 17) I think this is a rather good painting and the use of sunlight makes us see the mature Monet.

    2) From my point of view, the most important painting and successful for Monet was of Camille or also recognized as " Lady in the Green Dress". When you watch carefully with details the painting you can know that the dress and the whole picture has lots of details which in that time where really incredible and surprised to the viewers. It looked like a real person and this picture was painted in the 1866.
    4) If I have to choose a picture which really impressed me was "Women in the Garden". We, the viewers, can appreciate how he started to change the style that artist had in that time. We can see how flowers and trees represents a wonderful background. This painting received lots of critics and was flawed. People said that the mix between nature and a women was not so good. This is one of the characteristics that had led him to be one of the most important artist in the whole life.

    2) Monet's first successful painting was Camille, or, Lady in a Green Dress. The critics praised him over the silk fabric of the dress. They also loved how she was turned as if she was leaving. How that pose captured the movement of the dress. Yes I can see these qualities in the painting itself. The way the light in the painting shows the shine in the silk and the flow of the dress as if she was walking away.

    4) My favorite painting would have to be Avenue at Chailly on page 10 because it reminds me of the back roads and trails my family takes when riding horses or 4 wheeler's during the summer. The book makes me apriciate the painting more because it reminds me of home and I also love how the painting is so bright and open. It makes you feel like your really there.

    2. Monet's most famous painting was Camille or Lady in a Green Dress. The book tells us how the critics admired the lifelike figure and were never tired of praising it. They are pleased that "this is fine, real silk, really being worn." They are in love with it. I can see how they feel that it is nice fine silk. I can tell that it was what he was trying to and did portray.

    4. My favorite painting would have to be Terrace at Sainte-Adresse on page 21. It is bright with a million colors and that ultimately makes it beautiful in my eyes. It makes me feel like I could get lost in the painting. It is very realistic and lively. The fact that someone can actually paint this well makes me appreciate it. Because I have never seen it before, there is not anything that I see that I didn't see before.

    1. Monet was someone that would fight, not literally fight, but fight in the way that you would stand up for your art. He started out like many other artist. There is always skepticism and criticism at first, but artist, especially great ones use that as fuel to fire. Monet did just that. Usually when you present something that is different such as impressionism, it usually seen as unorthodox. Paris and the scene played a big part in Monet's paintings, and also meeting some of the famous artists of that time period (1860's- 19th century) such as Frederick Bazille.
2.) Camille was Monet's first famous painting. It broke new ground for Monet, and for the artistry world. Critics praised Monet for the painting of the fabric/silk, panning it as "real" and the qualities of the dress, which was unlike anything they had ever seen before. This is definitely in my opinion one of the most important paintings of this time, because this showed that you could put ordinary matter in paintings and make it look amazing. You didn't have to paint an elegant scene, such as Napoleon in battle. You saw more of nature and everyday things. Impressionism more or so showed the true beauty of ordinary images. This in itself is groundbreaking. Simple can be beautiful. All you might have to do is add a little more detail such as the Lady in the Green Dress.

    1) The coming of the new era of art began in and around Paris where he had open reigns to influence the type of art, as well as using the life of nature to new observers. knowing little of Monet allows the observer to see with out bias to his personality or upbringing class.
    2) Monet was the first to paint with such bright white based colors this vibrancy was so explicit in a way that it caused the brain to react in fanciful ways that maybe seemed inappropriate to some.

    2. Monet painted Camille as his first painting and critics praised him for the painting of silk and fine fabric. I felt that was one of the most important things of his time. He painted with bright, fluorescent colors.

    4. I personally like the black and white paintings the best. Woman in the Garden was my favorite by far. It showed how different his paintings were becoming.

    2. For me the most "truly" successful painting was Camille /Lady in The Green Dress. It was because it was different, and it wasn't all about detail, was very realistic. Yes, you can say that person is a woman and the way how the dress was painting made the paint look more realistic because the woman was in movement.
    4. Woman in the garden was the most interesting for me, I like Woman in the garden because seems more realistic and was very bright, the book help to see more details and understand the picture.
